Wrexham Foresters U16s were edged out 3–1 away at FC Gresford Athletic Juniors on Saturday in a match that demanded resilience, discipline, and character right to the final whistle.
The scoreline tells only part of the story. The Foresters remained competitive throughout, even after being reduced to 10 players in the second half, and showed real spirit in difficult moments.
Gresford opened the scoring in the first half, but Foresters responded with composure and quality. The equaliser came from a well-worked move down the left flank as Ben Prytherch delivered an excellent cross into the box, met emphatically by Alex, who finished with confidence to bring the sides level before the break.
The match turned following a second-half red card, forcing the Foresters to dig deep. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team stayed in the contest and continued to defend with determination. A standout moment came when Ethan produced an outstanding penalty save, a decisive intervention that kept the game within reach and earned him a deserved Player of the Match recognition.
As the game wore on, Gresford eventually capitalised, adding two late goals to seal the result. While disappointing, the performance contained plenty of positives to build on.
Speaking after the match, Coach Maz highlighted the fine margins that made the difference:
“We were in that game for a long time, even when we went down to 10. A little more composure on the ball, better decision-making in the final pass, and calmer defending in our box will take us forward. What we must improve is communication and encouragement over frustration.”
The group now turns its focus to learning, improving, and moving forward together — exactly the mindset required at this stage of development.
Onwards and upwards. 💚⚽
